South African Herbal Extract Effectively Treats Acute Bronchitis
Herbal Remedy for respiratory infection

South African Flora is well known for its beauty and biodiversity, and the plant extract Pelargonium sidoides DC is set to become the ultimate South African panacea for coughs, colds and respiratory problems. Pelargonium has a long and distinguished pedigree as a traditional remedy for treatment of gastrointestinal disorders and infections of the respiratory tract including tuberculosis.

Extensive clinical and scientific research has taken place in Germany to validate its traditional usage and today Pelargonium has gained European Union acceptance in the treatment of respiratory tract infections. This means that its efficacy and safety have been the subject of various clinical trials. International recognition of Pelargonium is set to become one of those medicine chest stand-bys you just cannot do without. It's ideal for the whole family, - which means it's gentle enough in the recommended doses for Children as well.

The story of Pelargonium and it rise to scientific acclaim is extraordinary. The discovery of gold and diamonds in Southern Africa brought white miners and TB, which ravaged the local population. In 1892, Major Stevens was cured of severe pulmonary tuberculosis with a Pelargonium root infusion called UMCKALOABO administered by a Basutho traditional healer. UMCKALOABO is translated from ZULU as "coughing fit". After his return from South Africa, Stevens took the Pelargonium herb and called it UMCKALOABO to England where he treated TB patients with it and tried to interest British doctors in its use. After initial successes the drug was banned by law, on the suspicion that Stevens had counterfeited a local drug. After the first successes in England, the former Swiss missionary Sechehaye used the herb in Switzerland in the 1920's. He prescribed infusions of the herb in homeopathic doses of increasing potency for a 6-8 week cure. He also prescribed the Pelargonium infusion for prevention in predisposed children and adults. Sechehay regularly presented his patients to the Geneva Medical Association conferences and allowed members to verify the healing process. Sechelay published and account of his work in German in 1933 as THE TREATMENT OF ORGANIC AND SURGICAL TUBERCULOSIS WITH UMCKALOABO.

The efficacy and tolerance of Pelargonium under the Zulu name UMCKALOABO has been tested in clinical studies in Germany between 1993 and 1994 by Professor Dr. Herbert Koodzwj and Dr. Oliver Kayser of the Pharmaceutical Institute, University of Berlin and they have stated that "The traditional South African Curative plant Pelargonium sidoides is undoubtedly a valuable addition to the treatment of ENO and airways infections. Pharmacological and clinical investigations show its anti-microbial and immuno-modulating abilities provide a scientific basis for the wide application of the drug in daily practice". Very importantly, they go on to confirm that "The use of antibiotics in children must be done circumspectly because their immune systems are still involved in interacting with their microbiological environment. At this stage UMCKALOABO provides a valuable alternative: It strengthens the non-specific immune defense system and has an ideal bacteriostatic effect. The non-toxicity and negligible side effects of this plant preparation are further plus points".
